Jane Austen’sPride and PrejudiceAdapted from the book by Jane Austenby Maura VaughnBy arrangement with The Branson SchoolDirected by Carole Mallett
The Hills Youth Theatre community is thrilled to introduce their new tutor for senior students, Carole Mallett, as she embarks on her HYT debut with the classic story by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Maura Vaughn.
Hailing from Montreal as a French Canadian, Carole fell in love with theatre when she was cast in the title role of The Little Prince by Antoine de St-Exupery in Year 7 at school. From that moment on, all she wanted to do was Theatre. In the early seventies Carole moved to Australia where she learned to speak English and completed her Honours and Masters Degrees both in Theatre Directing and Cinema at Flinders University (Drama Centre). This was then followed by a career as a drama lecturer, co-ordinator, teacher, play writer and director in Queensland and Victoria. Now locally based, Carole is very excited to work with the HYT senior students where she says she has already seen a great deal of talent. “It is my intention to give as much knowledge about Theatre and different approaches to acting styles and genres to the members of the senior group as possible.” Carole states. The students are eager to learn and work with Carole to “create Pride and Prejudice in such a way that the story is fresh and although many members of the audience will know the story, we should engage them so well that it will be as though it is the first time they experience it.”
Many of us are familiar with the story based on the novel of the same name written by Jane Austen and published in 1813. The Bennet family have five daughters to marry off and it is with great excitement they hear of a certain Charles Bingley who has just moved nearby. His best friend is Mr Darcy and both men are wealthy; surely they will be looking for wives… With much hear-say and misunderstandings, love lost and found, it is the pride of Darcy and the prejudice of Elizabeth that creates the gulf between them and their love.
